Paul states that it’s better to marry than to burn with lust, telling us marriage can be one of God’s remedies for sexual temptation. But just about every counselor knows and realizes that marriage doesn’t solve or cure an addiction to porn, strip clubs, affairs, and the like. How do we resolve that?
Enter Richard Baxter, a 17th century pastor who points us toward the nuance of marriage as a remedy, but an “insufficient remedy.” He does the best job I’ve ever read of someone who honors Paul’s suggestion that it’s better to marry rather than burn, while also conceding and even warning that hot sheets in the marital bedroom won’t solve the problem of cold souls given over to lust.
Lisa joins me in this conversation. It’s a bit longer than we normally record, but once I start reading Baxter, it’s difficult for me to stop. Hope you enjoy it!
