What Angels Are and Aren’t
This is the third of four posts on the nature of angels. In this one, we get rid of false, often silly, popular misconceptions and seek to recover a biblical one.
History and popular culture probably get angels as wrong as they get anything wrong. I’ve heard about a million pastors tell their congregations that the devil doesn’t actually have horns and a pitchfork, even though nobody really thinks he does. I don’t hear the same corrections about our misunderstandings concerning angels. Today’s church is particularly messy in this regard.
Perhaps the biggest misconception of popular culture is the notion that angels are advanced, evolved or glorified humans (thank you Jimmy Stewart and It’s a Wonderful Life). They’re not. Angels were never human and humans never become angels. Angels are distinct creations of their own kind. Not only do humans not become angels, but in some way, at least some Christians will help judge angels (1 Corinthians 6:3).
