Walking with my mom through the first anniversary of her husband’s death reminded me of many previous conversations I’ve had with those who have lost a spouse. These widows and widowers tell you things that make you want to go right home and hug your spouse. One of the things I’ve appreciated about my own wife the most, and I’ve told her this many times, is how incredibly wonderful she was with my parents in their later years. A widow’s grief over what she has lost can increase your joy over what you have, if you’ll just listen. Please take your time with this one, and ponder carefully what these grieving spouses have to teach the living.
